Sponge Community Dynamics on Caribbean Mangrove Roots: Signifi cance of Species Idiosyncrasies
نویسنده
چکیده
Descriptions of the rich sponge faunas inhabiting mangrove roots at various Caribbean sites are unanimous in pointing out the heterogeneity of species distribution and abundance patterns at all scales, from different portions of a single root to geographic subregions. Abiotic factors have often been implicated by correlation, but ecological interactions, and the life history and morphological characteristics of the sponge species, may also play key roles. Published studies vary widely in methods used, hampering direct comparisons of results, and raising the possibility that conclusions might be infl uenced by methods. I have been exploring the processes underlying distribution and abundance patterns by applying identical methods to studying community composition and dynamics at two sites in Belize (Twin Cays) and one site in Panama (Bocas del Toro). Established communities on roots have been fully censused, by volume and numbers of individuals, yearly for three years (i.e., four censuses). Community composition, when evaluated in terms of total volume of component species, is very similar at these three sites, although abiotic factors differ and geographic distances between sites range from 330 m to 1,200 km. The nine species found on censused roots at all three sites constituted a total of 89%, 84%, and 73%, respectively, of the total sponge volume at these sites. In general, species exhibited similar patterns of growth, size decrease, and mortality at all sites where they were found, suggesting that these are species-level characteristics. Numbers of individuals and volume provide very different assessments of the relative importance of different species in these communities. Community change over time appeared to be substantial, when measured in terms of shifts in total numbers of individuals or total sponge volume. However, taking into account dynamics of individual species provides a very different view, as most large changes in numbers or volume were not community wide but tended to refl ect life history characteristics typical of early successional stage species or idiosyncratic responses of one or a few species to particular environmental circumstances.

Variation in a simple trait of mangrove roots governs predator access to, and assemblage composition of, epibiotic sponges
Many species create biogenic habitat that may vary in quality depending on its attributes. This variation may in turn affect species interactions among members of the attendant community. We describe a habitat-provisioning species that, with variation in a simple trait, produces dichotomous classes of habitat: one that serves as a predation refuge and the other that does not. Subtidal roots of ...

1. Consistently very high regional diversity of tropical marine sponges reflects a combination of high within-habitat diversity and distinctness of species composition among habitats. Distinctive sponge faunas of Caribbean coral reefs and mangroves seem to support the assumption that abiotic factors determine sponge diversity within habitats and faunal differences between habitats because these...

Polarized debates about top-down vs. bottom-up control have given way to more nuanced understanding of control by both resources and consumers in many systems, but coral reef sponges have recently been asserted to differ from other groups in being controlled exclusively top-down. This assertion has been countered by reports of exclusively bottom-up control, with both conclusions based on studie...

A combination of transplant experiments and provision of recruitment surfaces has been initiated to determine the degree to which differences in sponge diversity and species composition at two Twin Cays sites, Hidden Creek and Sponge Haven, reflect differences in abiotic factors, ecological interactions, and recruitment history. This report contains the first stages of this project. The Hidden ...

Mangrove roots in the well-protected channels and ponds among dense mangrove stands provide very similar habitats for sponges in the Twin Cays and Pelican Cays and harbor extraordinarily dense and diverse sponge communities in both locations. The species of sponges are very different, however, possibly because of an important difference in context: the Twin Cays mangrove roots are embedded in p...
